Ellie Reeves MP is a British politician who represents the constituency of Lewisham West and Penge in the House of Commons. She is a member of the Labour Party and has been serving as Shadow Minister for Prisons and Probation and Deputy National Campaign Coordinator since 2021. She is also a former employment law barrister and a campaigner for social justice and human rights.

Birth, Parents & Education

Ellie Reeves entered the world on 11 December 1980 in Lewisham, London, England. Graham and Sally Reeves, who were both educators, were her parents.

Additionally, her sister Rachel Reeves is a Labour MP. Sydenham was where she grew up, and Adamsrill Primary School and Cator Park Secondary School were where she received her primary and secondary education.

She went on to study law at St. Catherine’s College, Oxford, where she earned a bachelor’s degree. She worked as an employment law barrister later, representing trade unions.

Ellie Reeves – Journey in Politics

Ellie Reeves became a member of the Labour Party at 15 and took part in various roles, such as the National Chair of Labour Students, the Vice-Chair of the London Labour Party, and a member of the National Executive Committee (NEC).

In April of 2017, she was the chosen Labour candidate for the seat of Lewisham West and Penge. Come June 2017, she won that seat with a substantial majority. Since then, she has been re-elected twice.

Ellie even worked as the Parliamentary Private Secretary to Kate Osamor – the Shadow International Development Secretary – from March to June of 2018. However, she resigned to show her backing of remaining within the single market following Britain’s exit from the European Union.

She then got the role of Shadow Solicitor General for England and Wales by Keir Starmer in April 2020 but switched to the role of Shadow Minister for Prisons and Probation in December 2021. In September 2023, she joined Wes Streeting as Deputy National Campaign Coordinator.

Ellie Reeves MP- Marriage and Children

Ellie Reeves got married to John Cryer MP, who chairs the Parliamentary Labour Party, in 2012. They are parents to two boys, one born in 2015 and another in late 2019. They both belong to the Labour Party and have been MPs since 2017 and 1997 respectively.

Some left-wing activists have criticised them for being on the right wing of the party. They both work in the shadow cabinet of Keir Starmer, with John Cryer as the Shadow Minister for Local Government and Ellie Reeves as the Deputy National Campaign Coordinator.

Ellie Reeves MP Net Worth

One source estimates that Ellie Reeves has a net worth of about $5 million. She earns most of her money from her work as a British politician. Reeves makes more than $1 million every year from her salary and other career earnings. She also works as an employment law barrister, helping trade unions and women with maternity rights issues.

Ellie Reeves Controversies

In 2019, a local activist reportedly tried to remove her from her constituency with a no-confidence vote for signing a statement that condemned the party’s choice to let Chris Williamson back in, an MP suspended for anti-Semitism claims.

The motion was later dropped and Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn stepped in to stop any effort to deselect her, saying that MPs who were pregnant would not have to go through reselection processes.

In 2023, she sent a letter to Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London, sharing her worries about how the Ultra Low Emission Zone (Ulez) would affect low-income families and pensioners in her area. She said that many of them would be “unfairly restricted” from driving around the capital and asked Khan to give more help and exemptions.

The letter caused a negative reaction from some environmental activists and Labour members who said she was out of touch and going against the party’s green agenda.

Ellie Reeves MP Future Plans

– She will keep fighting for justice and human rights, especially for rape and domestic violence survivors. She has slammed the government for putting off the release of the rape review, which wants to make the experiences and outcomes of rape survivors better in the criminal justice system. She has said that survivors are “in a kind of hell” and need more help and protection.

– She will back her sister, Rachel Reeves, who is the Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer, in making Labour’s economic policies and vision. She applauded Rachel’s speech on reaching economic growth, which showed Labour’s plans to put a windfall tax on energy companies, lower VAT on gas and electricity bills, and spend money on green jobs and infrastructure.

– She will stand up for and serve her constituents in Lewisham West and Penge, who have voted for her twice since 2017. She has shared her worries about how the Ultra Low Emission Zone (Ulez) would hurt low-income families and pensioners in her area and asked the Mayor of London to give more help and exemptions. She has also fought for issues such as mental health, childcare, and climate change.
