Being the older daughter of a Pakistani British family. Sara is assumed to have had the childhood of most kids, which included being surrounded by supportive, adoring family and friends. It is safe to mention that the beautiful young girl with a multitude of traits made a lasting impression on her community. Her unfortunate death has disrupted society, sparing no one.
On August 10, 2023, Sara Sharif’s body was discovered in her home in Woking, Surrey, after her father, Urfan Sharif, made a 999 call from Pakistan admitting he had “killed [his] daughter” by beating her excessively. Police found Sara’s body under a blanket in a bunk bed, revealing over 70 injuries, including fractures, burns, and bruises, indicating prolonged abuse.
She was found to be suffering numerous wounds that the authorities labelled having sprung from neglecting the minor for a long period. What caught the eye of many was that the postmortem examinations categorised her under severe violence. Bruises and fractures plagued her entire body.
Right after her death, Sara’s father, Urfan Sharif, stepmother, Beinash Batool, and uncle, Faisal Malik, onboarded a plane along with other children and started heading towards Pakistan. This sparked a manhunt for them and also made way to Sara getting justice. Meanwhile, the UK authorities started working with the Pakistani officials at these borders to get a lead on the suspects.
An international manhunt ensued, and on 13 September 2023, they were arrested at Gatwick Airport upon returning to the UK. Subsequently, they were charged with Sara’s murder and remanded in custody.
After a year, the case got further developed on Sara’s death, and to mark the date, evidence was presented to the public. During the hearing of this evidence, her father and stepmother were sentenced to life in jail on December 17, 2024. The judge hearing this case did state the high degree of abuse inflicted on Sara led towards her murder, which is why he described the actions as sadistic.
To put the forsutunity of the crime to a close, both parents were sentenced to no less than life in jail. Her father was given a sentence minimum term of 40 years, while Sara’s stepmother was sentenced for 33 years. Further charges were passed onto Faisal Malik, as he was an accomplice in the crime and attempted to escape the consequences.
Although there have been convictions, the case remains a focus of both public interest and legal investigation. The parties convicted attempted to contest their sentences on January 20, 2025, which triggered discussions of whether the sentences were just or not.
Since there have been arguments for and against the length of time served in the prison by the convicts, it seems there are more questions on justice, responsibility, and the deterrent nature of the law than previously contemplated.
